✧ It reached him that Abu Musa used to urinate into a bottle and say: 'The Children of Israel, if urine touched one of them, he would cut off that place.' Hudhayfah said: 'I wish your companion would not be so strict. I saw myself walking with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ until we came to a garbage heap, and he stood and urinated as one of you urinates. I went to move away from him, but he said: "Come near." So I drew near to him until I was at his heel.'

machine translationʿĀṣim b. Abī al-Najūd and Ḥammād b. Abī Sulaymān narrate it from Abū Wāʾil, from al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, and they erred in it regarding Abū Wāʾil. Al-Aʿmash and Manṣūr narrated it from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ, and that is the correct version.

machine translationI asked my father and Abū Zurʿah about a hadith narrated by Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah b. al-Ḥajjāj, Jarīr b. Ḥāzim, Abū Muʿāwiyah al-Ḍarīr, Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, Ibn ʿUyaynah and a group, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning wiping over the leather socks. Aḥmad b. Yūnus narrated it from Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh, from al-Aʿmash and ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Which of the two is correct from the hadith of al-Aʿmash? My father said: The correct one among the hadith of these people is from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh erred in this hadith; what al-Aʿmash meant was from Muslim b. Ṣubayḥ, from Masrūq, from al-Mughīrah, and he did not distinguish the hadith of Abū Wāʾil from the hadith of Muslim. I said to Abū Zurʿah: Which of the two is correct? He said: Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh erred in this; the correct one is from the hadith of al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah. Manṣūr narrated it from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah, and did not mention the wiping, but mentioned that the Prophet ﷺ urinated standing. I said: And al-Aʿmash? He said: Al-Aʿmash sometimes practised tadlīs (concealment of a source). I said to my father and Abū Zurʿah: Is the hadith of al-Aʿmash, from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah more correct, or the hadith of ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from al-Mughīrah? My father said: Al-Aʿmash is a better memorizer than ʿĀṣim. Abū Zurʿah said: The correct one is the hadith of ʿĀṣim, from Abū Wāʾil, from al-Mughīrah, from al-Mughīrah, from the Prophet ﷺ.
