✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on the campaign of the conquest. He went out walking to the graves until he reached the nearest of them and sat by it as if speaking to a person sitting there, crying. Umar ibn al-Khattab faced him and said: 'What makes you weep, may Allah make me your ransom?' He said: 'I asked my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, to permit me to visit the grave of Muhammad's mother, and He permitted me. I asked Him to permit me to seek forgiveness for her, and He refused. I had forbidden you three things: [keeping] the meat of sacrificial animals after three days—eat what you like; visiting graves—whoever wishes may visit, for I have been permitted to visit the grave of Muhammad's mother, and whoever wishes may refrain; and [using] certain vessels for drinking: the gourd, the green jar, and the pitch-coated vessel. I commanded you with vessels, but a container neither makes anything lawful nor unlawful; so avoid every intoxicant.'
