✧ I hated ʿAlī with a hatred I had never felt for anyone, and I loved a man from Quraysh only because of his hatred of ʿAlī. That man was sent in command of a cavalry force, and I accompanied him only because of his hatred of ʿAlī. We captured some prisoners, and he wrote to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: 'Send us someone to take the fifth.' He sent ʿAlī to us. Among the captives was a young slave girl who was among the best of them. He took the fifth and divided the rest, then came out with his head dripping. We said: 'O Abū al-Ḥasan, what is this?' He said: 'Did you not see the slave girl among the captives? I divided and took the fifth, and she fell to the fifth, then to the Prophet's household ﷺ, then to the family of ʿAlī, and I had intercourse with her.' The man wrote to the Prophet of Allah ﷺ, and I said: 'Send me.' So he sent me as a collector of zakāt. I began to read the letter and say: 'He has spoken the truth.' He took hold of my hand and the letter, and said: 'Do you hate ʿAlī?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Do not hate him, and if you love him, increase your love for him. For by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Muḥammad, the share of the family of ʿAlī in the fifth is better than a slave girl.' After the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, no one among people became more beloved to me than ʿAlī.
