حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَاصِمٌ الْأَحْوَلُ

رَأَيْتُ الْأُصَيْلِعَ - يَعْنِي: عُمَرَ - يُقَبِّلُ الْحَجَرَ، وَيَقُولُ: إِنِّي لَأُقَبِّلُكَ، وَأَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ حَجَرٌ لَا تَنْفَعُ وَلَا تَضُرُّ، وَلَوْلَا أَنِّي رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يُقَبِّلُكَ لَمْ أُقَبِّلْكَ

Translation

✧ I saw al-Usayliʿ—meaning Umar—kissing the Stone and saying: 'I am kissing you, and I know that you are a stone that neither benefits nor harms, and had I not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ kissing you, I would not have kissed you.'
