Translation

✧ There was a dispute among some of the Anṣār, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to reconcile between them. The prayer time arrived, and Bilal came to Abu Bakr and said, “O Abu Bakr, the prayer time has come and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ is not here. Should I call the adhan and the iqamah, and you come forward and lead the prayer?” He said, “Do whatever you wish.” So Abu Bakr came forward and began the prayer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, and the people signaled to Abu Bakr by clapping. Abu Bakr started to step back, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him to stay in his place. So Abu Bakr moved back and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came forward and prayed. When he finished the prayer, he said, “O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from remaining firm?” He said, “It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to stand before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” Then he said, “Why did you clap?” They said, “To inform Abu Bakr.” He said, “Clapping is for women, and glorifying is for men.”
