حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجٌ حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثٌ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي قَتَادَةَ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا قَتَادَةَ يُحَدِّثُ
أَنَّهُ قَامَ فِيهِمْ فَذَكَرَ لَهُمُ الْجِهَادَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ [عَزَّ وَجَلَّ]، وَالْإِيمَانَ بِاللهِ مِنْ أَفْضَلِ الْأَعْمَالِ، فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ يُكَفَّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: نَعَمْ، إِنْ قُتِلْتَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ، ثُمَّ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: كَيْفَ قُلْتَ؟ قَالَ: أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ قُتِلْتُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ يُكَفَّرُ عَنِّي خَطَايَايَ؟ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: نَعَمْ إِنْ قُتِلْتَ وَأَنْتَ صَابِرٌ مُحْتَسِبٌ مُقْبِلٌ غَيْرُ مُدْبِرٍ، إِلَّا الدَّيْنَ فَإِنَّ جِبْرِيلَ [عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ] قَالَ لِي ذَلِكَ

✧ He stood among them and mentioned to them jihad in the path of Allah [Mighty and Majestic] and that faith in Allah is among the best of deeds. A man stood up and said, 'O Messenger of Allah, do you think that if I am killed in the path of Allah, my sins will be expiated?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Yes, if you are killed in the path of Allah while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'What did you say?' He said, 'Do you think that if I am killed in the path of Allah, my sins will be expiated?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes, if you are killed while you are patient, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, except for debt; for Jibril ﷺ told me that.'
