✧ Abu Qatadah? I said: "Yes, O Messenger of God." He said: "May God preserve you as you preserved us since last night." Then he said: "I think we have only made it hard for you. Take us off the road — or: turn us away from the road." He said: So we turned off the road, and the Messenger of God ﷺ made his mount kneel. Each man of us rested his head on his mount's foreleg, and we did not wake until the sun had risen. He mentioned the sound of the shrike. He said: I said: "O Messenger of God, we are ruined; the prayer has escaped us." The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "You are not ruined, and the prayer has not escaped you. It only escapes the awake, not the sleeper. Is there any water?" He said: I brought him a waterskin — or he said: a small ablution vessel — with water in it. The Messenger of God ﷺ performed ablution, then handed it to me with some water left in it. He said: "Keep it, for it will have a story." He ordered Bilal, and he gave the call to prayer, then prayed two rak'ahs. Then he moved from his place and ordered him, and he made the iqamah, and he prayed the Fajr prayer. Then the Prophet of God ﷺ said: "If the people obeyed Abu Bakr and Umar, they were kind to themselves and did right. If they opposed them, they were harsh to themselves." Abu Bakr and Umar, when they missed the Prophet ﷺ, said to the people: "Stay by the water until morning." But they refused them. The Messenger of God ﷺ reached them at the end of the day, and they had almost perished of thirst. They said: "O Messenger of God, we are ruined." He called for the small ablution vessel, then called for a vessel, and a vessel larger than a cup but smaller than a bowl was brought. The Messenger of God ﷺ tucked them under his arm, then began pouring into the vessel, and the people drank until they all drank. Then the Messenger of God ﷺ called out: "Is there anyone still thirsty?" He said: Then he returned the small ablution vessel with about as much water as was in it. He said: We asked him: "How many were you?" He said: "With Abu Bakr and Umar there were eighty men, and we were with the Messenger of God ﷺ twelve men."
