✧ Abu al-‘Aliyah came to me, myself and a companion of mine. He said to us: Come, for you are younger in age than I and more retentive of hadith than I. So he took us to Bishr b. ‘Asim and said to him: Relate to these two your hadith. He said: ‘Uqbah b. Malik narrated to us—Abu al-Nadr said: al-Laythi; Bahz said: he was from his tribe—he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a raiding party. He said: They raided a people, and one man fled from the people. A man from the raiding party followed him with his sword drawn. The one who fled said: I am a Muslim. But he did not consider what he said, and he struck him and killed him. The news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he spoke harshly about it. It reached the killer, and while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was delivering a sermon, the killer said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he only said what he said to seek protection from being killed. He turned away from him and from those facing him among the people, and resumed his sermon. Then he said again: O Messenger of Allah, he only said what he said to seek protection from being killed. He turned away from him and from those facing him, and resumed his sermon. Then he could not remain patient, and he said a third time: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, he only said it to seek protection from being killed. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ turned to him with displeasure visible on his face and said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, refuses me regarding one who kills a believer—three times.
