✧ Abdullah b. Hawala al-Azdi stayed with me, and he said to me while he was indeed staying in my house: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us around Madinah on foot to gain booty, and we returned without gaining anything, and he recognized the hardship in our faces. So he stood among us and said: O Allah, do not entrust them to me lest I be weak, and do not entrust them to themselves lest they be incapable, and do not entrust them to the people lest they prefer themselves over them. Then he said: The Levant, Rome, and Persia will certainly be opened for you—or: Rome and Persia—until one of you has such and such camels, and such and such cattle, and such and such sheep, until one of them is given a hundred dinars and he despises it. Then he placed his hand on my head—or: on my crown—and said: O Ibn Hawala, when you see the caliphate has descended upon the Holy Land, then earthquakes, tribulations, and great affairs have drawn near, and the Hour on that day is closer to the people than this hand of mine to your head.
