✧ During the Farewell Pilgrimage, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood up while he was riding behind al-Faḍl b. ʿAbbās on a dark camel and said: "O people, take from knowledge before knowledge is taken away, and before knowledge is raised up." Allah, Mighty and Majestic, had sent down: "O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they are shown to you, will distress you. But if you ask about them while the Qur'an is being revealed, they will be shown to you. Allah has pardoned that, and Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing." He said: "So we had come to dislike much of his questioning, and we were wary of that when Allah sent down to His Prophet ﷺ." He said: "Then we came to a Bedouin and bribed him with a cloak." He said: "He wrapped it around himself until I saw the edge of the cloak coming out from under his right eyebrow." He said: "Then we said to him: Ask the Prophet ﷺ." He said: "So he said to him: O Prophet of Allah, how will knowledge be raised from us while the muṣḥafs are among us, and we have learned what is in them and taught it to our women, our children, and our servants?" He said: "The Prophet ﷺ raised his head, and his face had turned red with anger." He said: "He said: May your mother be bereaved of you! These Jews and Christians have the muṣḥafs among them, yet they have not held to a single letter of what their prophets brought them. Indeed, one of the ways knowledge departs is that its bearers depart." He said it three times.
