✧ A man came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in the mosque and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense requiring a prescribed punishment, so enforce it upon me.' He said: 'The Prophet ﷺ remained silent.' Then he repeated it, saying it to him another time. Then the prayer was called, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed, then departed. Abu Umāmah said: 'The man followed him.' He said: 'And I followed him.' ʿAbd al-Ṣamad said in his narration: 'I departed with the Prophet ﷺ, and the man was following him, so that I might know what he would say to him.' He said: 'The man said to him: "O Messenger of Allah, I have committed an offense requiring a prescribed punishment, so enforce it upon me." He said: "The Prophet ﷺ said to him: 'Did you not perform ablution before leaving your house, and do it well, then pray with us?' He said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Indeed, Allah has forgiven you your offense' or 'your sin' – ʿIkrimah was uncertain about it. ʿAbd al-Ṣamad said in his narration: 'I departed with the Prophet ﷺ, and the man followed him.'"

machine translationI said to my father: al-Awzāʿī narrated it from Shaddād Abū ʿAmmār, from Wāthilah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Which of the two is more correct? He said: Al-Awzāʿī knew it better, because Shaddād was a Damascene who moved to al-Yamāmah, while al-Awzāʿī was from his own country, and al-Awzāʿī understood it better. The people of al-Yamāmah narrate three hadiths from him, saying: from Shaddād, from Abū Umāmah; this is one of them. I said: And the other two are the ones that al-Awzāʿī narrated? They said: This one is separate from that one, except that al-Walīd b. Muslim relates from al-Awzāʿī, from Shaddād, from Wāthilah, while ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid narrated from al-Awzāʿī, from Shaddād, from Abū Umāmah. So the narration of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid from al-Awzāʿī agrees with the narration of ʿIkrimah b. ʿAmmār. Al-Walīd b. Muslim made many errors (kathīr al-wahm), and in my view the hadith from Abū Umāmah is more likely correct, and al-Walīd was mistaken in that.
