✧ The Messenger of God ﷺ prepared a military expedition, so I came to him and said, “O Messenger of God, pray to God for martyrdom for me.” He said, “O God, grant them safety and spoils.” He said: We went on the expedition and returned safe and with spoils. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ prepared a second military expedition, so I came to him and said, “O Messenger of God, pray to God for martyrdom for me.” He said, “O God, grant them safety and spoils.” He said: We went on the expedition and returned safe and with spoils. He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ prepared a third military expedition, so I came to him and said, “O Messenger of God, I have come to you repeatedly twice asking you to pray to God for martyrdom for me, and you said, ‘O God, grant them safety and spoils.’ O Messenger of God, pray to God for martyrdom for me.” He said, “O God, grant them safety and spoils.” He said: We went on the expedition and returned safe and with spoils. Then I came to him after that and said, “O Messenger of God, command me to an action that I may take from you by which God may benefit me.” He said, “You must observe fasting, for there is nothing like it.” He said: Abu Umamah, his wife, and his servant were never found except fasting. If they saw fire or smoke during the day in their home, they knew that a guest had come to them. He said: Then I came to him later and said, “O Messenger of God, you commanded me to a matter, and I hope that God [Mighty and Majestic] has benefited me by it. So command me to another matter by which God may benefit me.” He said, “Know that you do not prostrate to God a single prostration except that God raises you a degree by it, or removes—or he said: and removes—Mahdi was uncertain—a sin from you by it.”
