✧ that one day he rode on a donkey of his called Yaʿfūr, whose halter was of palm fiber. Then he said: 'Mount, O Muʿādh.' I said: 'Go on, O Messenger of God.' He said: 'Mount.' So I mounted behind him, and the donkey threw us off. The Prophet ﷺ stood up laughing, and I stood up remembering to myself with regret. Then he did that a second time, then a third time. Then he mounted and the donkey carried us. He reached back his hand and struck my back with a whip he had, or a stick. Then he said: 'O Muʿādh, do you know what God's right upon His servants is?' I said: 'God and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'God's right upon His servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him.' He said: Then he rode on as God willed. Then he reached back his hand and struck my back, saying: 'O Muʿādh, O son of Umm Muʿādh, do you know what the servants' right upon God is if they do that?' I said: 'God and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'The servants' right upon God, if they do that, is that He admits them to Paradise.'
