✧ Hassan b. Thabit recited poetry while he was in the mosque, and Umar passed by him and glanced at him, so Hassan said: "By Allah, I have recited poetry in it to one better than you." He feared that he would accuse him of referring to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he went on and left him.

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated it from Maʿmar, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUrwah, from Ḥassān b. Thābit and Abū Hurayrah. Shuʿayb b. Abī Ḥamzah and Ṣāliḥ b. Abī al-Akhḍar narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah and Ḥassān b. Thābit. Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from al-Zuhrī and Ḥassān. Ismāʿīl b. Umayyah narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab alone, from the Prophet ﷺ, and at its end he said: Ibn Shihāb said: Ḥassān said to Abū Hurayrah, "Did you hear the Messenger of God ﷺ say: 'O God, support him with the Holy Spirit'?" He said: "Yes." Thus al-Zuhrī's report from Abū Hurayrah is mursal. The report of ʿAbd al-Aʿlā b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā from Maʿmar is an error (khaṭaʾ); what is preserved (maḥfūẓ) is from al-Zuhrī, from Saʿīd, and from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah.
