✧ When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed away, the orators of the Ansar stood up, and some of them began to say: O assembly of the Muhajirun, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed a man from among you, he paired with him a man from among us. So we think that this matter should be undertaken by two men, one from you and the other from us. He said: Then the orators of the Ansar followed one another upon that. He said: Then Zaid b. Thabit stood up and said: Indeed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was from the Muhajirun, and the imam should only be from the Muhajirun, and we are his supporters just as we were supporters of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Then Abu Bakr stood up and said: May Allah reward you with good from a tribe, O assembly of the Ansar, and may He make firm your speaker. Then he said: By Allah, if you had done other than that, we would not have made peace with you.
