✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ rode a donkey and seated me behind him. He said: “O Abu Dharr, what do you think if severe hunger strikes the people, so that you cannot get up from your bed to your mosque—how will you act?” I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: “Keep yourself chaste.” He said: “O Abu Dharr, what do you think if severe death strikes the people, in which a house contains a servant—meaning the grave—how will you act?” I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: “Be patient.” He said: “O Abu Dharr, what do you think if people kill one another—meaning—until the stones of Zayt are flooded with blood, how will you act?” He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: “Sit in your house and bolt your door.” I said: What if I am not left alone? He said: “Then go to those of whom you are one, and be among them.” I said: Shall I take up my weapon? He said: “Then you would share with them in what they are in; but if you fear that the flash of the sword will terrify you, throw the edge of your cloak over your face, so that he bears his sin and your sin.”

machine translationAbū ʿImrān al-Jawnī transmits it, and there is disagreement about him. Mubārak b. Faḍālah narrated it from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, from Abū Tamīmah al-Hujaymī, from Abū Dharr. Shuʿbah, Ḥammād b. Zayd, Muḥammad b. Thābit al-ʿAbdī and Marḥūm al-ʿAṭṭār contradicted him, and narrated it from Abū ʿImrān al-Jawnī, from ʿAbdullāh b. al-Ṣāmit, from Abū Dharr, and this is the preserved (maḥfūẓ) version.
