✧ I used to be far from water and would become junub, and I would not find water, so I would perform tayammum. That weighed on my mind, so I went to Abu Dharr's house but did not find him. I went to the mosque, and his appearance had been described to me. There he was praying, and I recognized him by the description. I greeted him, but he did not respond to me until he finished. Then he responded to me. I said: 'Are you Abu Dharr?' He said: 'My family claims that.' I said: 'No one among the people was more beloved to me to see than you.' He said: 'You have seen me.' I said: 'I used to be far from water and would become junub, and I would remain for days performing tayammum, and that weighed on my mind or became unclear to me!' He said: 'Do you know Abu Dharr? I was in Madinah and found its climate disagreeable, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered for me a small flock of sheep. I went out with it and became junub, so I performed tayammum with clean earth and prayed for days. That weighed on my mind until I thought I had perished. So I ordered a she-camel of mine – or a young camel – to be saddled, then I rode and came until I reached Madinah. I found the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in the shade of the mosque among a group of his companions. I greeted him, and he raised his head and said: "Glory be to Allah, Abu Dharr?!" I said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah. I became junub and performed tayammum for days, and that weighed on my mind until I thought I had perished." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for water for me, and a black slave girl brought it in a wooden bowl, splashing. I hid behind the mount, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered a man to screen me, so I washed. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Abu Dharr, clean earth is a means of purification as long as you do not find water, even for ten years. When you are able to use water, then touch your skin with it."'
