✧ The roof of my house was opened while I was in Makkah, and Gabriel ﷺ descended and opened my chest, then washed it with water from Zamzam. Then he brought a golden basin full of wisdom and faith, poured it into my chest, then closed it. Then he took me by the hand and ascended with me to the heaven. When he came to the lowest heaven, he asked for it to be opened. It was said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'Gabriel.' It was said: 'Is there anyone with you?' He said: 'Yes, Muhammad is with me.' It was said: 'Has he been sent for?' He said: 'Yes, so open.' When we ascended to the lowest heaven, there was a man with dark figures on his right and dark figures on his left. When he looked to his right he smiled, and when he looked to his left he wept. He said: 'Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son.' I said to Gabriel: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is Adam, and these dark figures on his right and left are the souls of his descendants. The people of the right are the people of Paradise, and the dark figures on his left are the people of the Fire. So when he looks to his right he laughs, and when he looks to his left he weeps.' Then Gabriel ascended with me until he came to the second heaven and said to its keeper: 'Open.' Its keeper said to him the like of what the keeper of the lowest heaven had said, and he opened for him. Anas b. Malik said: He mentioned that he found in the heavens Adam, Idris, Moses, Jesus, and Abraham (peace be upon them), but it was not firmly established for me how their stations were, except that he mentioned that he found Adam in the lowest heaven and Abraham in the sixth heaven. Anas said: When Gabriel ﷺ and the Messenger of God ﷺ passed by Idris, he said: 'Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.' I said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is Idris.' Then I passed by Moses, and he said: 'Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.' I said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is Moses.' Then I passed by Jesus, and he said: 'Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous brother.' I said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is Jesus son of Mary.' Then I passed by Abraham, and he said: 'Welcome to the righteous prophet and the righteous son.' I said: 'Who is this?' He said: 'This is Abraham ﷺ.' Ibn Shihab said: And Ibn Hazm informed me that Ibn 'Abbas and Abu Habba al-Ansari said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Then I was taken up until I appeared at a level where I could hear the scratching of the pens."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it from Anas; ʿUqayl and Yūnus related it from him. There is disagreement about Yūnus: Abū Ḍamrah said, from Yūnus, from Abū, and I think that "Dharr" dropped out for him, so he made it from Ubayy b. Kaʿb and was mistaken in it. Qatādah also narrated this hadith from Anas b. Mālik, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and he brought it in full. Shuʿbah narrated part of it from Qatādah, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, the story of the two rivers; Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān related it from Shuʿbah. It seems that all the accounts are sound, because their narrators are reliable (athbāt).
