✧ A man from Banū Fazārah argued with me about the man whom Mūsā ﷺ followed. I said, 'He is al-Khaḍir ﷺ.' The Fazārī said, 'He is another man.' Then Ubayy b. Kaʿb passed by us. Ibn ʿAbbās said: I called him and asked him, 'Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the one whom Mūsā ﷺ followed?' He said, 'Yes. I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: While Mūsā was sitting among a group of the Children of Israel, a man said to him, "Is there anyone more knowledgeable about Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) than you?" He said, "I do not think so." Then Allah revealed to him, "Indeed, My servant al-Khaḍir." So he asked for the way to him, and Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) made the fish a sign for him: if he lost it [he would find him]. And his affair was as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) related.'
