✧ Sulaym came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of God, Muʿādh b. Jabal comes to us after we have slept and during the day we are at our work. He calls to prayer, and we go out to him, and he prolongs it for us.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'O Muʿādh b. Jabal, do not be a cause of trial. Either pray with me or lighten it for your people.' Then he said: 'O Sulaym, what of the Qurʾān do you have?' He said: 'I ask God for Paradise and seek refuge in Him from the Fire. By God, I do not know your murmuring or the murmuring of Muʿādh.' The Messenger of God ﷺ said: 'And does my murmuring and the murmuring of Muʿādh amount to anything but that we ask God for Paradise and seek refuge in Him from the Fire?' Then Sulaym said: 'Tomorrow you will see, if God wills, when the people meet.' He said: And the people were preparing for Uḥud, and he went out and was among the martyrs [may God's mercy and good pleasure be upon him].
