✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was sitting with his legs drawn up, wrapped in a shamlah, its fringe falling on his feet. I said, “Which of you is Muḥammad, or the Messenger of God?” He gestured with his hand to himself. I said, “O Messenger of God, I am from the desert people and I have their roughness, so advise me.” He said: “Do not deem any good deed insignificant, even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face, or pouring from your bucket into the vessel of one asking for water. If a man insults you with what he knows about you, do not insult him with what you know about him; for its reward will be yours and its burden on him. Beware of letting your lower garment hang low, for letting it hang low is from arrogance, and God [Mighty and Majestic] does not love arrogance. And do not insult anyone.” After that I never insulted anyone, not a sheep, not a camel.
