Chain of narrators
- ʿAbd al-Raḥman
✧ We came as a delegation to Muʿāwiyah to console him, along with Ziyād, and with us was Abū Bakrah. When we arrived, he was not pleased with any delegation as he was pleased with us, and he said: O Abū Bakrah, relate to us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ used to like a good dream and would ask about it, and one day he said: Which of you has seen a dream? A man from the group said: I did. I saw a balance let down from the sky, and you and Abū Bakr were weighed in it, and you outweighed Abū Bakr. Then Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were weighed in it, and Abū Bakr outweighed ʿUmar. Then ʿUmar and ʿUthmān were weighed in it, and ʿUmar outweighed ʿUthmān. Then the balance was lifted. The Prophet ﷺ interpreted it, meaning he explained it, and said: A caliphate upon the pattern of prophethood; then God, blessed and exalted is He, gives sovereignty to whom He wills. He said: So we were shoved in our necks and expelled. When it was the next day, we returned to him, and he said: O Abū Bakrah, relate to us something you heard from the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: So he hit him with it, and we were shoved in our necks. When it was the third day, we returned, and he asked him again. He said: So he hit him with it. Then Muʿāwiyah said: Do you say that we are kings? We are content with sovereignty.
