✧ I had been wishing to meet a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who would tell me about the Khawarij. I met Abu Barzah on the day of 'Arafah among a group of his companions, and I said: 'O Abu Barzah, tell us something you heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say about the Khawarij.' He said: 'I will tell you what my ears heard and my eyes saw. Some dinars were brought to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was distributing them. With him was a black man with shaved hair, wearing two white garments, between whose eyes was the mark of prostration. He presented himself before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, coming to him from in front, but he gave him nothing. Then he came to him from his right, but he gave him nothing. Then he came to him from his left, but he gave him nothing. Then he came to him from behind, but he gave him nothing. He said: "By Allah, O Muhammad, you have not been just today in the distribution." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became very angry, then said: "By Allah, after me you will not find anyone more just to you than me," saying it three times. Then he said: "From the direction of the east will come forth men like this one among them. Their guidance is like this; they recite the Qur'an but it does not go beyond their collarbones. They pass through the religion as an arrow passes through the target, and they do not return to it." And he placed his hand on his chest. "Their mark is shaving the head. They will keep emerging until the last of them comes out. When you see them, kill them"—he said it three times—"the worst of creation and creatures"—he said it three times.'
