✧ I came to the Prophet ﷺ with two men from the Ash'aris, one on my right and the other on my left. Both asked for an appointment, while the Prophet ﷺ was using a toothstick. He said, 'What do you say, O Abu Musa—or O Abd Allah b. Qays?' I said, 'By the One who sent you with the truth, they did not reveal to me what was in their minds, and I did not realize they were seeking an appointment.' He said—and it is as if I can see his toothstick beneath his lip, which had receded—'We do not—or I do not—appoint to our work anyone who seeks it. But go, O Abu Musa—or O Abd Allah b. Qays.' So he sent him to Yemen, then sent Mu'adh b. Jabal after him. When Mu'adh arrived, he said, 'Dismount,' and he placed a cushion for him. There was a man with him who was bound. He said, 'What is this?' He replied, 'He was a Jew who embraced Islam, then reverted to his religion, the evil religion, and became a Jew again.' Mu'adh said, 'I will not sit until he is killed—the decree of Allah and His Messenger.' He said it three times. So he ordered it, and the man was killed. Then they discussed night prayer. Mu'adh b. Jabal said, 'As for me, I sleep and I pray—or I pray and I sleep—and I hope in my sleep for what I hope in my prayer.'
