حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنِ الْحَكَمِ عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ

كُنْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فِي غَزْوَةٍ فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أُبَيٍّ لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ قَالَ فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَحَلَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُأُبَيٍّ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَكُنْ شَيْءٌ مِنْ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَلَامَنِي قَوْمِي وَقَالُوا مَا أَرَدْتَ إِلَى هَذَا؟ قَالَ فَانْطَلَقْتُ فَنِمْتُ كَئِيبًا حَزِينًا قَالَ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ نَبِيُّ اللهِ ﷺ أَوْ أَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ إِنَّ اللهَ ﷻ قَدْ أَنْزَلَ عُذْرَكَ وَصَدَّقَكَ قَالَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الْآيَةُ {هُمُ الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ لَا تُنْفِقُوا عَلَى مَنْ عِنْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ حَتَّى يَنْفَضُّوا} [المنافقون 7] حَتَّى بَلَغَ {لَئِنْ رَجَعْنَا إِلَى الْمَدِينَةِ لَيُخْرِجَنَّ الْأَعَزُّ مِنْهَا الْأَذَلَّ} [المنافقون 8]

✧ I was with the Messenger of God ﷺ on a military expedition. Abdullah b. Ubayy said: If we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel the more humble. He said: I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ. He said: Abdullah b. Ubayy swore that none of that had happened. He said: My people blamed me and said: What did you intend by this? He said: I went off and slept, sorrowful and sad. He said: The Prophet of God ﷺ sent for me, or I went to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he said: God, exalted be He, has sent down your excuse and confirmed you. He said: Then this verse was revealed: {They are the ones who say, 'Do not spend on those who are with the Messenger of God until they disband'} [Quran 63:7], until he reached {If we return to Madinah, the more honored will surely expel the more humble} [Quran 63:8].
