حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ جُمْهَانَ قَالَ

كُنَّا نُقَاتِلُ الْخَوَارِجَ وَفِينَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أَوْفَى، وَقَدْ لَحِقَ غُلَامٌ لَهُ بِالْخَوَارِجِ، وَهُمْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ الشَّطِّ وَنَحْنُ مِنْ ذَا الشَّطِّ، فَنَادَيْنَاهُ [أَيَا فَيْرُوزُ، أَيَا فَيْرُوزُ] وَيْحَكَ هَذَا مَوْلَاكَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَبِي أَوْفَى، قَالَ: نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ هُوَ لَوْ هَاجَرَ، قَالَ: مَا يَقُولُ عَدُوُّ اللهِ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْنَا: يَقُولُ: نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ هُوَ لَوْ هَاجَرَ. قَالَ: فَقَالَ: أَهِجْرَةٌ بَعْدَ هِجْرَتِي مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَتَلَهُمْ وَقَتَلُوهُ

Translation

✧ We were fighting the Khawārij, and among us was ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Awfā. A servant of his had joined the Khawārij, and they were on that bank while we were on this bank. We called out to him, 'O Fayrūz, O Fayrūz! Woe to you! This is your master ʿAbdullāh b. Abī Awfā.' He said, 'What a good man he is, if only he had emigrated.' He said, 'What does the enemy of Allah say?' He said: We said, 'He says: What a good man he is, if only he had emigrated.' He said: Then he said, 'Is there emigration after my emigration with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?' Then he said, 'I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Ṭūbā is for the one who kills them and is killed by them.'
