حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ هُوَ ابْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ عَنْ شَيْخٍ مِنْ بَجِيلَةَ قَالَ
اسْتَأْذَنَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ ؓ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ ﷺ وَجَارِيَةٌ تَضْرِبُ بِالدُّفِّ، فَدَخَلَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُمَرُ ؓ فَدَخَلَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَأْذَنَ عُثْمَانُ ؓ فَأَمْسَكَتْ، قَالَ: فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ: إِنَّ عُثْمَانَ رَجُلٌ حَيِيٌّ

✧ Abū Bakr ؓ sought permission to enter upon the Prophet ﷺ while a slave girl was beating the duff. He entered. Then ʿUmar ؓ sought permission and entered. Then ʿUthmān ؓ sought permission, and she stopped. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "ʿUthmān is a shy man."
