✧ I was sitting with ‘Abd Allāh and Abū Mūsā al-Ash‘arī. Abū Mūsā said to ‘Abd Allāh, “If a man does not find water, is he not to pray?” ‘Abd Allāh said, “No.” Abū Mūsā said, “Do you not remember when ‘Ammār said to ‘Umar: Do you not remember when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me and you with camels, and I became ritually impure and rolled in the dust? When I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed and said, ‘It would have sufficed you to do this,’ and he struck the ground with his palms, then wiped both his palms together, and wiped his face once with one strike.” ‘Abd Allāh said, “No doubt, I have not seen ‘Umar accept that.” Abū Mūsā said to him, “Then what about this verse in Sūrat al-Nisā’: {But if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth}?” He said, “And ‘Abd Allāh did not know what to say. He said, ‘If we gave them a concession in tayammum, one of them would be quick, whenever the water was cold on his skin, to perform tayammum.’”
