✧ I was sitting with Abū Mūsā and ‘Abd Allāh. Abū Mūsā said, “O Abū ‘Abd al-Raḥmān, what do you think—if a man does not find water and is in a state of major ritual impurity for a month, is he not to perform tayammum?” He said, “No, even if he does not find water for a month.” Abū Mūsā said to him, “Then what do you do with this verse in Sūrat al-Mā’idah: {But if you do not find water, then perform tayammum with clean earth} [al-Nisā’ 43]?” ‘Abd Allāh said, “If they were given a concession in this, they would be quick, whenever the water was cold, to perform tayammum with earth and pray.” Abū Mūsā said to him, “You only disliked this for that reason?” He said, “Yes.” Abū Mūsā said to him, “Have you not heard the statement of ‘Ammār: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent me on an errand, and I became ritually impure and found no water, so I rolled in the dirt as an animal rolls. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and mentioned that to him, and he said, ‘It would have sufficed you to do this,’ and he struck the ground with his hand, then wiped each of them with the other, then wiped his face with them.” Al-A‘mash did not approve of wiping only the palms. ‘Abd Allāh said to him, “Did you not see that ‘Umar was not satisfied with ‘Ammār’s statement?”
