✧ I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and he taught me Islam, and he described the prayer to me, and how I should pray each prayer at its time. Then he said to me: “How will you be, O Ibn Ḥātim, when you ride from the palaces of Yemen, fearing none but God, until you alight at the palaces of al-Ḥīrah?” He said: I said: “O Messenger of God, where are the battalions of Ṭayyi’ and their men?” He said: “God will suffice you against Ṭayyi’ and others besides them.” He said: I said: “O Messenger of God, we are a people who hunt with these dogs and falcons. What is lawful for us from them?” He said: “Lawful for you is what you have trained of hunting beasts, training them as God has taught you. So eat of what they hold for you, and mention God’s name over it. Whatever you have trained of dog or falcon, then you send it and mention God’s name over it, eat of what it holds for you.” I said: “Even if it kills?” He said: “Even if it kills, and it has not eaten anything of it, for it only held it for you.” I said: “What do you think if other dogs mix with our dogs when we send them?” He said: “Do not eat until you know that your dog was the one that held it for you.” I said: “O Messenger of God, we are a people who shoot. What is lawful for us?” He said: “Lawful for you is what you have mentioned God’s name over and pierced; so eat of it.” He said: I said: “O Messenger of God, we are a people who shoot with the miʿrāḍ. What is lawful for us?” He said: “Do not eat what you have hit with the miʿrāḍ unless you have slaughtered it properly.”
