Chain of narrators
- Ismāʿīl
- Ayyūb
- Muḥammad b. Sīrīn
✧ We were with al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah, and he was asked: “Did anyone from this ummah lead the Prophet ﷺ in prayer other than Abū Bakr?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “That increased my confidence in the narration he was about to relate.” He said: “We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a journey. In the pre-dawn hours, he struck the neck of my mount, and I thought he had a need, so I turned aside with him. We went until we were apart from the people. He dismounted from his mount, then went off and disappeared from me until I could not see him. He remained for a long time, then came and said: “Do you need anything, O Mughīrah?” I said: “I have no need.” He said: “Do you have water with you?” I said: “Yes.” I went to a water skin—or he said a small water skin—hanging at the rear of the saddle and brought it to him. I poured water over him, and he washed his hands, washing them well.” He said: “And I doubt whether he said he rubbed them with dust or not. Then he washed his face. Then he went to bare his arm, and he was wearing a Syrian jubbah with tight sleeves, and it was too tight, so he took his hands out from under it. Then he washed his face and hands.” He said: “In the narration, washing the face appears twice, so I do not know whether it was so or not. Then he wiped his forelock, wiped over his turban, and wiped over his leather socks. Then we mounted and caught up with the people. The prayer had been called, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf had stepped forward and led them in one rakʿah while they were in the second. I went to inform him, but he stopped me. So we prayed the rakʿah we caught and made up what we had missed.”
