✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us at Mina while he was on his riding camel, which was chewing its cud and its saliva was flowing between my shoulders. He said: "Indeed Allah [Mighty and Majestic] has allotted to every person his share of inheritance, so no bequest is permissible for an heir. The child belongs to the marriage bed, and for the adulterer is the stone. Indeed, whoever claims descent from other than his father, or takes as patrons other than his own, out of aversion to them, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels, and all people." Ibn Jaʿfar said: Saʿīd said: Maṭar said: "And neither an optional nor an obligatory deed will be accepted from him." Yazīd said in his narration: "Neither an optional nor an obligatory deed will be accepted from him," or "neither an obligatory nor an optional deed."

What scholars said about it

In their own words, as Hadith Unlocked records them. They are shown, not summarised into a grade.

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationWhich of the two is more sound (aṣaḥḥ)? He said: "From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ghanm is more sound (aṣaḥḥ)."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18300
  • Shafiʿī

machine translationAl-Shāfiʿī inclined in al-Umm to the view that this text is mass-transmitted (mutawātir), and said: "We found the people of legal rulings, and those of the people of knowledge of the military expeditions (maghāzī) among Quraysh and others whom we have memorized from, not disagreeing that the Prophet ﷺ said in the year of the Conquest: 'There is no bequest for an heir.' And they transmit it from those of the people of knowledge whom they met and from whom they memorized it. So it is a transmission of the many from the many, and it is stronger than the transmission of a single person."

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18300

machine translationAl-Fakhr al-Rāzī disputed that this hadith is mass-transmitted (mutawātir).

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18300
  • Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī

machine translationThe chain of each of them is not free of criticism, but their totality indicates that the hadith has a basis.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 18300
