حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ أَخْبَرَنَا الْعَوَّامُ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْجَبَّارِ الْخَوْلَانِيُّ قَالَ
دَخَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ الْمَسْجِدَ، فَإِذَا كَعْبٌ يَقُصُّ، فَقَالَ: مَنْ هَذَا؟ قَالُوا: كَعْبٌ يَقُصُّ، فَقَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: « لَا يَقُصُّ إِلَّا أَمِيرٌ، أَوْ مَأْمُورٌ، أَوْ مُخْتَالٌ » قَالَ: فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ كَعْبًا فَمَا رُئِيَ يَقُصُّ بَعْدُ
Translation

✧ A man from among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ entered the mosque and found Ka’b narrating stories. He said: “Who is this?” They said: “Ka’b, narrating stories.” He said: “I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: ‘No one narrates stories except a ruler, one commanded to do so, or a show-off.’” He said: That reached Ka’b, and he was not seen narrating stories afterward.
