✧ He and a companion of his set off to the Prophet ﷺ but did not find him. ‘A’ishah gave them dates and porridge to eat. It was not long before the Prophet ﷺ came, walking briskly, leaning forward as he walked. He said: “Have you two eaten?” We said: Yes. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I ask you about prayer. He said: “Perform ablution thoroughly, and pass your fingers between your fingers, and when you sniff water into your nose, do so thoroughly unless you are fasting.” I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have a wife, and I mentioned her vulgarity. He said: “Divorce her.” I said: She has companionship and a child. He said: “Command her, or tell her: if there is any good in her, she will do it, and do not strike your wife as you strike your slave-girl.” While he was thus, the shepherd drove the flock into the fold, and in his hand was a newborn kid. He said: “Has it given birth?” He said: Yes. He said: “What did it bear?” He said: A female kid. He said: “Slaughter a sheep in its place.” Then he turned to me and said: “Do not think – and he did not say do not think – that we slaughtered it only for your sake. We have a hundred sheep, and we do not like them to exceed that. So when the shepherd’s flock bears a female kid, we command him to slaughter a sheep in its place.”
