✧ “While I was at the House, between sleeping and waking, one of the three came between the two men. I was brought a golden basin filled with wisdom and faith. My chest was split from the throat to the lower belly, and my heart was washed with Zamzam water. Then it was filled with wisdom and faith. Then I was brought a mount smaller than a mule and larger than a donkey. Then I set off with Gabriel ﷺ, and we came to the lowest heaven. It was said: Who is this? It was said: Gabriel. It was said: Who is with you? It was said: Muhammad. It was said: Has he been sent to? He said: Yes. It was said: Welcome to him; what a fine arrival has come. I came to Adam ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, son and prophet. Then we came to the second heaven. It was said: Who is this? It was said: Gabriel. It was said: Who is with you? He said: Muhammad. And the like of that. I came to Yahya and Isa (peace be upon them) and greeted them, and they said: Welcome to you, brother and prophet. Then we came to the third heaven, and the like of that. I came to Yusuf ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, brother and prophet. Then we came to the fourth heaven, and the like of that. I came to Idris ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, brother and prophet. Then we came to the fifth heaven, and the like of that. I came to Harun ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, brother and prophet. Then we came to the sixth heaven, and the like of that. Then I came to Musa ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, brother and prophet. When I passed him, he wept. It was said: What makes you weep? He said: O Lord, this young man whom You sent after me—more and better of his nation will enter Paradise than those of my nation who enter. Then we came to the seventh heaven, and the like of that. I came to Ibrahim ﷺ and greeted him, and he said: Welcome to you, son and prophet. He said: Then the Frequented House was raised for me. I asked Gabriel ﷺ, and he said: This is the Frequented House; seventy thousand angels pray in it every day, and when they leave it, they never return to it, as their last time. He said: Then the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary was raised for me. Its fruit was like the jars of Hajar, and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. At its base were four rivers: two hidden and two apparent. I asked Gabriel, and he said: As for the two hidden ones, they are in Paradise; as for the two apparent ones, they are the Euphrates and the Nile. He said: Then fifty prayers were made obligatory upon me. I came to Musa ﷺ, and he said: What have you done? I said: Fifty prayers have been made obligatory upon me. He said: I know people better than you. I struggled with the Children of Israel with the utmost struggle, and your nation will not be able to bear that. Return to your Lord and ask Him to lighten it for you. He said: So I returned to my Lord [Mighty and Majestic] and asked Him to lighten it for me, and He made it forty. Then I returned to Musa and came to him, and he said: What have you done? I said: He made it forty. He said to me the like of his first statement. So I returned to my Lord [Mighty and Majestic], and He made it thirty. I came to Musa ﷺ and told him, and he said to me the like of his first statement. So I returned to my Lord [Mighty and Majestic], and He made it twenty, then ten, then five. I came [to] Musa and told him, and he said to me the like of his first statement. I said: I am ashamed before my Lord [Mighty and Majestic], however many times I return to Him. Then it was proclaimed: I have enacted My obligation and lightened it for My servants, and I will reward a good deed with ten times its like.”

  • Abū Ḥatim al-Rāzī

machine translationI asked my father about a hadith that Yūnus narrated from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Abū Dharr, from the Prophet ﷺ, concerning the Ascension (al-miʿrāj), and that Qatādah narrated from Anas, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, from the Prophet ﷺ. It was said to my father: which of the two is closer? He said: I do not set anyone of the people of his era level with al-Zuhrī. Then he said: I hope that both are sound. Another time he said: the hadith of al-Zuhrī is more sound. I said to my father: they differed regarding al-Zuhrī. He said: Yes, some of them say, from al-Zuhrī, from Anas, from Ubayy b. Kaʿb, but al-Zuhrī from Anas from Abū Dharr is more sound.

  • Dāraquṭnī

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it from Anas; ʿUqayl and Yūnus related it from him. There is disagreement about Yūnus: Abū Ḍamrah said, from Yūnus, from Abū, and I think that "Dharr" dropped out for him, so he made it from Ubayy b. Kaʿb and was mistaken in it. Qatādah also narrated this hadith from Anas b. Mālik, from Mālik b. Ṣaʿṣaʿah, and he brought it in full. Shuʿbah narrated part of it from Qatādah, from Anas, from the Prophet ﷺ, the story of the two rivers; Ibrāhīm b. Ṭahmān related it from Shuʿbah. It seems that all the accounts are sound, because their narrators are reliable (athbāt).
