✧ There was in Damascus a man from the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, and he was a solitary man who rarely sat with people. He was only in prayer, and when he finished, he would only glorify and magnify Allah until he came to his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent out a military detachment, and it returned. A man from among them came and sat in the gathering where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was, and he said to a man beside him: If only you had seen us when we met the enemy! So-and-so charged and thrust, and said: Take it, and I am the Ghifari lad! How do you regard his statement? He said: I consider that he has only nullified his reward. Another heard that and said: I see no harm in that. They disputed until the Prophet ﷺ heard, and he said: 'Glory be to Allah! There is no harm that he be praised and rewarded.' He said: I saw Abu al-Darda' rejoice at that, and he began raising his head toward him and saying: Did you hear that from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ? He would say: Yes. He kept repeating it to him until I said: He will surely kneel on his knees. He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: 'The one who spends on horses in the cause of Allah is like one who stretches out his hands in charity and does not withdraw them.' He said: Then he passed by us another day, and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What an excellent man is Khuraym al-Asadi, were it not for the length of his hair and his letting his lower garment hang!' That reached Khuraym, so he took a blade and cut his hair to the middle of his ears, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins. He said: My father informed me: After that I entered upon Mu'awiyah, and there was an old man with him whose hair was above his ears and whose cloak reached his shins. I asked about him, and they said: This is Khuraym al-Asadi. He said: Then he passed by us another day while we were with Abu al-Darda', and Abu al-Darda' said to him: A word that benefits us and does not harm you. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: 'You are coming upon your brothers, so prepare your mounts and prepare your clothing, for Allah [Mighty and Majestic] does not love obscenity or obscene behavior.'
