  • Ibn Ḥazm

machine translationThe hadith of ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī, who said: "I saw the Prophet ﷺ wiping over the two leather socks and the turban." Al-Bukhārī narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ from the hadith of al-Awzāʿī, from Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr, from Abū Salamah, from Jaʿfar b. ʿAmr b. Umayyah, from his father. It was already mentioned in the Kitāb ʿIlal of al-Khallāl. Muḥammad b. ʿAwf al-Ḥimṣī said: Abū al-Mughīrah narrated it to us from Yaḥyā b. Abī Qilābah, from Jaʿfar b. ʿAmr, but Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal rejected it. Muḥammad b. Kathīr al-Miṣṣīṣī narrated it from al-Awzāʿī and omitted Jaʿfar, as Ibn Abī Ḥātim mentioned. Ibn Baṭṭāl said: Abū Salamah did not hear from ʿAmr. Ibn Abī Khaythamah mentioned from Ibn Maʿīn that the hadith of ʿAmr b. Umayyah is mursal. The ḥāfiẓ Abū Muḥammad al-Fārisī refused this, saying: This strengthens the report, because Abū Salamah heard it directly from ʿAmr, and also heard from Jaʿfar that it was from him. Al-Aṣīlī said: The mention of the turban in this hadith is an error of al-Awzāʿī, because Shaybān narrated it from Yaḥyā and did not mention the turban, and Ḥarb b. Shaddād and Abān al-ʿAṭṭār followed him. So these three opposed him, and it is necessary to give preference to the group over the individual. As for the corroboration of Maʿmar, it is mursal and has no mention of the turban in it. ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated it: "He wiped over his two leather socks," and did not mention the turban.

    in مسند أحمد, p. 17823
