✧ The envoys of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, offering for the Messenger of God ﷺ and for Abu Bakr the blood money of each of them to whoever kills or captures them. While I was sitting in one of the assemblies of my people, Banu Mudlij, a man from among them came and stood over us. He said: O Suraqah, I have just seen some dark shapes on the coast; I think they are Muhammad and his companions. Suraqah said: I realized that it was they, but I said: They are not them; you saw so-and-so and so-and-so, who set out just now. He said: Then I stayed in the assembly for a while, then I got up and entered my house. I ordered my slave girl to bring out my horse, which was behind a hillock, and to hold it for me. I took my spear and went out with it from the back of the house. I drew lines on the ground with my spear, lowered the spearhead, and came to my horse and mounted it. I urged it on at a fast pace until I saw their dark shapes. When I drew near enough for them to hear my voice, my horse stumbled and threw me off. I got up, reached for my quiver, took out the divining arrows, and cast them to decide whether I should harm them or not. The arrow I disliked came out: do not harm them. I mounted my horse, disobeyed the arrows, and urged it on at a fast pace. When I drew near them, my horse stumbled and threw me off. I got up, reached for my quiver, took out the arrows, and cast them; the one I disliked came out: do not harm them. I disobeyed the arrows, mounted my horse, and urged it on at a fast pace until I heard the recitation of the Prophet ﷺ, while he did not turn around and Abu Bakr turned around often. The forelegs of my horse sank into the ground up to its knees. It threw me off. I spurred it on, and it struggled to rise, hardly able to pull out its forelegs. When it stood upright, suddenly from the marks of its forelegs rose a dust cloud like smoke into the sky. Ma'mar said: I asked Abu 'Amr b. al-'Ala': What is 'uthan? He paused for a while, then said: It is smoke without fire. Al-Zuhri said in his narration: I cast the divining arrows and the one I disliked came out: do not harm them. So I called out to them, offering safety, and they stopped. I mounted my horse and came to them. It occurred to me—when I encountered the obstacles that prevented me from reaching them—that the cause of the Messenger of God ﷺ would prevail. I told him: Your people have set a blood price on you. I informed them of news about their journey and what people intended against them. I offered them provisions and goods, but they took nothing from me and asked nothing of me except: keep our whereabouts hidden. I asked him to write me a document of peace to keep me safe, so he ordered 'Amir b. Fuhayrah, and he wrote it for me on a piece of tanned leather. Then he went on.
