✧ Utbah b. Ghazwan delivered a sermon—Bahz said: And he said before this time: The Messenger of God ﷺ delivered a sermon to us—he said: So he praised and extolled God, then said: To proceed: This world has announced its departure and turned away swiftly; nothing remains of it but a remnant like the remnant in a vessel, which its owner drains. You are moving from it to an abode that will never cease, so move with the best of what you have. It has been mentioned to us that a stone is thrown from the edge of Hell and falls for seventy years without reaching its bottom. By God, you will fill it. Are you amazed? By God, it has been mentioned to us that the distance between the two gateposts of Paradise is a journey of forty years, and a day will come upon it when it is crowded and packed. I saw myself as the seventh of seven with the Messenger of God ﷺ, when we had no food but tree leaves, until the corners of our mouths became sore. I picked up a burdah and split it between myself and Sa'd. He used half as a waist-wrapper, and I used the other half as a waist-wrapper. Today, all of us have become governors of one of the cities. I seek refuge with God from being great in my own eyes but small in the sight of God. There was never a prophethood but that it passed through successive phases until its outcome became kingship. You will soon test—or learn about—the rulers after us.
