✧ We came to al-`Irbadh b. Sariyah, one of those concerning whom the verse was revealed, “Nor upon those who, when they came to you for you to carry them, you said, ‘I find no mount for you’” (Quran 9:92). We greeted him and said: We have come as visitors, well-wishers, and learners. Al-`Irbadh said: The Messenger of God ﷺ one day led us in the morning prayer, then turned to face us and delivered a powerful admonition that made eyes weep and hearts tremble. Someone said: O Messenger of God, this is like the admonition of one bidding farewell, so what do you enjoin upon us? He said: I enjoin you to fear God, and to hear and obey, even if a black slave is placed over you. For whoever of you lives after me will see much disagreement. You must hold to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided, rightly directed successors; hold fast to it and cling to it with your back teeth. And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance.
