حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ بْنِ جَابِرٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ
سَمِعْتُ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَقُولُ عَلَى هَذَا الْمِنْبَرِ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ مَا بَقِيَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا بَلَاءٌ وَفِتْنَةٌ، وَإِنَّمَا مَثَلُ عَمَلِ أَحَدِكُمْ كَمَثَلِ الْوِعَاءِ إِذَا طَابَ أَعْلَاهُ طَابَ أَسْفَلُهُ، وَإِذَا خَبُثَ أَعْلَاهُ خَبُثَ أَسْفَلُهُ

✧ I heard Muʿāwiyah say on this pulpit: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: What remains of the world is trial and tribulation. The example of each one’s deeds is like a vessel: if its top is good, its bottom is good; and if its top is bad, its bottom is bad.
