✧ On the day of Badr, I was standing in the rank. I looked to my right and my left, and there I was between two young men of the Ansar, young in age. I wished I were between sturdier men than them. One of them nudged me and said: 'Uncle, do you know Abu Jahl?' I said: 'Yes, and what do you need from him, nephew?' He said: 'I have heard that he reviled the Messenger of God ﷺ. By Him in whose hand is my soul, if I saw him, my body would not part from his body until the quicker of us dies.' Then the other one nudged me and said the same to me. I was amazed at that. It was not long before I saw Abu Jahl moving among the people. I said to the two of them: 'Do you not see? This is your companion whom you asked about.' They rushed at him and confronted him, and they struck him until they killed him. Then they went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him. He said: 'Which of you killed him?' Each of them said: 'I killed him.' He said: 'Did you wipe your swords?' They said: 'No.' The Messenger of God ﷺ looked at the two swords and said: 'Both of you killed him,' and he ruled that his spoils belonged to Muʿadh b. Amr b. al-Jamuh. They were Muʿadh b. Amr b. al-Jamuh and Muʿadh b. Afra.
