✧ I was a scribe for Jazʾ b. Muʿāwiyah, the paternal uncle of al-Aḥnaf b. Qays, when ʿUmar’s letter came to us a year before his death: “Kill every sorcerer—and Sufyān sometimes said: and sorceress—and separate every mahram among the Magians, and forbid them from the zamzamah.” So we killed three sorceresses, and we separated a man from his intimate female relative according to the Book of Allah. Jazʾ prepared a great deal of food, placed the sword on his thigh, invited the Magians, and they threw down a mule-load or two mule-loads of silver, and they ate without zamzamah. ʿUmar had not taken—and Sufyān sometimes said: accepted—the jizyah from the Magians until ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf testified that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it from the Magians of Hajar.
