✧ We arrived with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at al-Hudaybiyyah, and we were fourteen hundred. Upon it were fifty sheep that it could not water. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat at its well-mouth, and either he supplicated or spat, and it gushed forth, so we watered and drew water. He said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called for the pledge at the base of the tree, and the first of the people pledged allegiance to him, and he pledged and he pledged, until when he was in the middle of the people, he said: 'O Salamah, pledge allegiance to me.' He said: 'I have already pledged allegiance to you among the first of the people, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Again, so pledge.' And he saw that I was unarmed, so he gave me a shield or a buckler. Then he accepted pledges and pledges, until when he was among the last of the people, he said: 'Will you not pledge allegiance to me?' He said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, I have pledged with the first of the people, their middle, and their last.' He said: 'Again, so pledge,' so I pledged allegiance to him. Then he said: 'Where is your buckler or shield that I gave you?' He said: I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, my uncle ʿĀmir met me unarmed, so I gave it to him.' He said: Then he said: 'You are like the one who said: O Allah, seek for me a beloved who is dearer to me than myself,' and he laughed. Then the polytheists communicated with us for peace, until some of us walked to some of them. He said: I was a servant of Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh, currying his horse, watering it, and eating from his food, and I left my family and property as an emigrant to Allah and His Messenger. When we and the people of Makkah made peace and some of us mixed with some of them, I came to the tree, swept away its thorns, and lay down in its shade. Four men from the people of Makkah came to me, and while they were polytheists, they began to revile the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I moved away from them to another tree, and they hung up their weapons and lay down. While they were like that, a caller cried out from the bottom of the valley: 'O people of the Muhājirūn, Ibn Zunaym has been killed!' I drew my sword and attacked the four, seized their weapons, and made them into a bundle. Then I said: 'By the One who honored Muḥammad, none of you raises his head except that I strike the one—meaning his eyes.' I came driving them to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and my uncle ʿĀmir came with Ibn Mikraz leading him by his horse; he was leading seventy, until we brought them to a halt. He looked at them and said: 'Let them go; they shall have the beginning of wickedness.' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ pardoned them, and it was revealed: 'And He it is who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them.' Then we returned to Madinah and stopped at a place called Laḥy Jamal. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought forgiveness for whoever climbed the mountain that night, as if he were a scout for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions. I climbed that night two or three times. Then we arrived in Madinah, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent his riding camels with his servant Rabāḥ, and I was with him, and I went out with Ṭalḥah's horse to exercise it upon the camels' backs. When morning came, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿUyaynah al-Fazārī had raided the riding camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, seized them all, and killed their herdsman.
