حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا وُهَيْبٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ يَحْيَى عَنْ عَبَّادِ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ زَيْدٍ قَالَ
لَمَّا كَانَ زَمَنُ الْحَرَّةِ أَتَاهُ آتٍ فَقَالَ: هَذَا ابْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ، - وَقَالَ عَفَّانُ مَرَّةً: هَذَاكَ ابْنُ حَنْظَلَةَ - يُبَايِعُ النَّاسَ، قَالَ: عَلَى أَيِّ شَيْءٍ يُبَايِعُهُمْ ؟ قَالَ: عَلَى الْمَوْتِ، قَالَ: لَا أُبَايِعُ عَلَى هَذَا أَحَدًا بَعْدَ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ

✧ At the time of al-Harrah, someone came to him and said, “This is Ibn Hanzalah — and Affan once said, ‘That is Ibn Hanzalah’ — taking allegiance from the people.” He said, “Upon what is he taking their allegiance?” He said, “Upon death.” He said, “I will not give allegiance to anyone upon this after the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.”
