He said, 'Some people took captives after killing the enemy, and this news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said, 'What is wrong with certain people that they kill captives before taking them?' A man said, 'O Messenger of Allah, aren't they the children of the polytheists?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Indeed, the best among you are the children of the polytheists. Each child is born upon true nature (Fitrah), and then his parents make him a Jew or a Christian.' Hasan then concealed it."

machine translationIt is a well-known, established ḥadīth, though there is some concern about it, because ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, Abū ʿAbdillāh b. Mandah, Abū Dāwūd and others denied that al-Ḥasan heard anything from al-Aswad.
