حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ جَامِعِ بْنِ أَبِي رَاشِدٍ وَعَاصِمٍ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ قَالَ

كُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ عَلَى عَهْدِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ، فَأَتَانَا بِالْبَقِيعِ فَقَالَ: " يَا مَعْشَرَ التُّجَّارِ - فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ أَحْسَنَ مِنَ اسْمِنَا - إِنَّ الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ الْحَلِفُ وَالْكَذِبُ، فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

Translation

✧ We used to be called al-samāsirah (brokers) in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He came to us at al-Baqīʿ and said: 'O company of merchants'—and he named us with a name better than our name—'Indeed, selling is attended by swearing and lying, so mix it with charity.'
