حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ عَنْ أَبِي وَائِلٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِي غَرَزَةَ قَالَ

كُنَّا نَبْتَاعُ الْأَوْسَاقَ بِالْمَدِينَةِ، وَكُنَّا نُسَمَّى السَّمَاسِرَةَ قَالَ: فَأَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ فَسَمَّانَا بِاسْمٍ هُوَ أَحْسَنُ مِمَّا كُنَّا نُسَمِّي بِهِ أَنْفُسَنَا فَقَالَ: يَا مَعَاشِرَ التُّجَّارِ، إِنَّ هَذَا الْبَيْعَ يَحْضُرُهُ اللَّغْوُ وَالْحَلِفُ، فَشُوبُوهُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ

Translation

✧ We used to buy loads (of goods) in Madinah, and we were called al-samāsirah (brokers). The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us and named us with a name that is better than what we called ourselves. He said: 'O companies of merchants, indeed this selling is attended by idle talk and swearing, so mix it with charity.'
