✧ ‘Abdullah b. Sahl of the Ansar was found slain in a well among the wells of Khaybar. His paternal uncles and his brother came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — his brother ‘Abd al-Rahman b. Sahl and his paternal uncles Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah. ‘Abd al-Rahman went to speak before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but he said: “The elder, the elder.” So one of his paternal uncles spoke, either Huwayyisah or Muhayyisah. Sufyan said: I forgot which of them was the elder. They said: “O Messenger of Allah, we found ‘Abdullah slain in a well among the wells of Khaybar.” Then he mentioned the Jews, their evil and their enmity. He said: “Let fifty of you swear that the Jews killed him.” They said: “How can we swear about what we did not see?” He said: “Then let the Jews exonerate themselves with fifty oaths that they did not kill him.” They said: “How can we accept their oaths when they are polytheists?” He said: So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ paid his blood money from his own resources. A young she-camel from them kicked me.
