✧ I went out with Ubayd Allah b. Adi b. al-Khiyar to Syria. When we arrived in Homs, Ubayd Allah said to me: Would you like to see Wahshi and ask him about the killing of Hamza? I said: Yes. Wahshi used to live in Homs. He said: So we asked about him, and it was said to us: He is there in the shade of his palace, as if he were a skin of water. He said: So we came until we stood before him and greeted him, and he returned the greeting. Ubayd Allah had wrapped his turban, and Wahshi saw only his eyes and his feet. Ubayd Allah said: O Wahshi, do you know me? He said: He looked at him, then said: No, by God, except that I know that Adi b. al-Khiyar married a woman called Umm Qital bt. Abi al-Is, and she bore him a boy in Makkah, and he sought a wet nurse for him, so I carried that boy with his mother and handed him to her, and it is as if I saw your feet. He said: So Ubayd Allah uncovered his face, then said: Will you not tell us about the killing of Hamza? He said: Yes. Hamza killed Tu'ayma b. Adi at Badr, so my master Jubayr b. Mut'im said to me: If you kill Hamza for my uncle, you are free. When the people went out on the day of Aynayn — he said: Aynayn is a mountain below Uhud, and between them is a valley — I went out with the people to fight. When they lined up for battle, Siba' came out and said: Who will duel? Hamza b. Abd al-Muttalib went out to him and said: O Siba', O son of Umm Anmar, O son of the cutter of clitorises, do you oppose God and His Messenger? Then he attacked him, and he was like yesterday that has passed. I lay in wait for Hamza behind a rock until he passed by me. When he came near me, I threw my spear and placed it in his groin until it came out between his buttocks. He said: That was the last of him. When the people returned, I returned with them. I stayed in Makkah until Islam spread there, then I went to Ta'if. They sent a messenger to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and it was said to him: He does not harm messengers. So I went out with them until I came to the Messenger of God ﷺ. When he saw me, he said: Are you Wahshi? I said: Yes. He said: Are you the one who killed Hamza? I said: What happened has reached you, O Messenger of God. He said: Can you not keep your face hidden from me? So I returned. When the Messenger of God ﷺ died and Musaylima the liar appeared, I said: I will go out against Musaylima, perhaps I will kill him and thereby compensate for Hamza. So I went out with the people, and their affair was what it was. Then I saw a man standing in a gap in a wall, as if he were a gray camel with his head raised. I threw my spear at him and placed it between his breasts until it came out between his shoulder blades. And a man from the Ansar crawled to him and struck him with a sword on his head.
